Last week, I frightened off an adult Bald Eagle from this same location along the river when I came along the path too quickly. Since then, I've learned to approach that area slowly and quietly, and this morning it paid off. I was able to spend about 5 minutes watching this immature Baldie perched in the dead cottonwood. It called out a few times, but I don't know if it's a juvenile from this spring with a parent still nearby, or perhaps an offspring from a previous year.
You can see it has a blue ID band on its left ankle, but so far I haven't been able to get a clear enough zoom-in to read what it says.
Unfortunately, our visit was cut short when a military helicopter flew low over the river, and the eagle took off in the opposite direction.
